Pictured above is a 5×5 (C5524)Comstock Swing Panel Trap used with a Nose Cone (CN557) in a positive type set with the nose cone placed over a chipmunk den hole. A nose cone is a cubical wire accessory with an opening in the bottom to accommodate the chipmunk hole and an opening on one end to accept a double door Comstock Swing Panel live trap.
Chipmunks were living under our blueberry bushes, so they had to go. We simply put a nose cone with bottom entry over a chipmunk hole and slid a trap up to the nose cone. For good measure we sprinkled some black sunflower seeds into the trap on each side of the trigger. In this way not only would chipmunks coming up out of the hole be captured but other chipmunks coming from the outside can also be caught. In a few hours we had 6. We also used the swing panel trap at the end of the corn rows after chipmunks had eaten the seed twice. Again, in a few hours we had two chipmunks and caught a third a few days later.
In places where there were no holes we just put the traps on the ground with seeds scattered inside. The first time this type of trap was used a home owner caught 98 chipmunks and 16 squirrels. The following year he got 46 more chippies and 8 more squirrels.
This same system is used for woodchucks, ground squirrels, skunks, armadillos or any bur roughing animals, even badgers.
