Pictured are the four primary Comstock Swim Through Beaver Cage Traps. The two cage traps on the right are the go to production models for beaver and otter, made in Wisconsin. On the far right is the 12x12x36, with the workhorse of the line 12x18x39 just to the left. It is the 12×18 that is the primary trap used for taking beaver and otter all over North America, the trap we and others rely on most often. Though thousands of beaver and hundreds of otter have been taken in these traps, some have found value in custom traps that provide more options with additional sizes.
On the left are two custom traps to compliment the 12×12 and 12×18 made in the shop in New York. The mid-sized 12x15x33 splits the difference in width, halfway between the two production traps. A second larger custom model at 15x24x36 is not only 33% wider than the 18, 6 inches wider, it is also taller by 3 inches. One trapper likes the 12×15 while working from a boat in a trap large enough to easily take 40-50 pound beaver while taking up less room where space is a premium. Another trapper likes to fill a culvert with the large 15×24, no fencing required.
We have made beaver traps with 10×12 up to 15×24 openings from 32 to 48 long. The smallest has a 120 square inch opening, while the largest is three times larger coming in at 360 square inches. It all comes down to personal preference, need and situation, as they all work great.
One of these traps should be just about right for any job, but if a different size is required, we can build it. If you have questions or ideas, give us a shout.
