Trapping Raccoon in Chimney’s

There are a number of different Comstock cage traps that can be used with or without adaptors to catch raccoons in chimneys.   For large chimneys, like the one pictured, the easiest way is simply to use a standard 9x11x30 or 36 inch long double door Comstock powered door, wire triggered cage trap.  You can lower this trap down into the chimney out of sight, while using a cross rod or two threaded rod  through the cage wire mesh to hold the trap in place and keep it from dropping into the chimney.  With this positive set up you may take raccoons coming or going.  Comstock single door 9x11x30 or 36 inch traps may also be used to take raccoons existing a chimney.

If the chimney is smaller, too small for the 9×11 cage traps, we have developed an adapter that clamps solidly onto a cage with hog rings or the like.  The adapter measures 5×9 at the opening to fit these smaller chimneys.  While the adapter fits down into a smaller chimney a full 18 inches for stability, the cage trap itself remains above the chimney.  Again, when one of the set ups above is employed in a large or small chimney, either a single or double door Comstock 9x11x30 or 36 inch long cage trap will do the job.

It should be noted that the adapter can also be used to funnel raccoons from tight places like dormers or soffits in positive sets over denning holes.  They could be used under a low porch or any tight space too small for the cage alone for skunks or woodchucks too, as the adapter extends the trap and makes the trap a flush mount unit to fit tightly against an opening not perfectly suited to the cage trap as is.

Additionally, two years ago we engineered a smaller 5x9x30 single door chimney trap to drop down inside smaller chimneys, which has recently become part of the Comstock line.  Not only does this trap do the job of larger chimney traps offered by other trap makers, it is attractively priced at $25 less.  Smaller and more compact, this 30 inch trap is a full 13 inches shorter than its counterpart, a lot less trap to carry up a ladder or down with a raccoon in it.  Moreover, with tight 1/2 x 1 mesh and unlike other traps using larger 1×1 cage mesh, raccoons can not reach out and grab clothes or a trapper.

Each of these traps is incredibly durable to stand up to any ‘coon, with a solid lock up system that prevents escape no matter what position the trap is placed or how it is carried.

Due to a recent request, we may yet add one more versatile chimney trap to the lineup.

A shout out to Cody W. for the great pictures he took used in this post!
