Having set a boathouse on a large lake in what has become, “an otter toilet,” nine days ago, we really did not know exactly what to expect.  With every confidence in the equipment and method, we really had no idea on how long it would be before  the first catch was made and no way to tell how many otter were or would frequent the location over a period of time.  Also, there is no way to tell how much time would be needed to rid the boathouse of otter defecating everywhere.  Now in mating season, the males are doing a lot of traveling.  Otter often have large circuits anyway, so when we began, we had and still have no set time frame.

At any rate, after nine very successful days we have made three catches, all big otter, probably males and each in excess of 20 pounds.  One of the interesting parts, the first otter was a pale brown, the second otter sort of an odd dingy gray, while the third was a beautiful slick black one.  With no way to tell how many there will be or how long it will take, we’ll just keep on with the trapping until it seems right to call it off.
